When the kitten is born he is blind and has no possibilities of protection. But from the birth nature gave another well developed sense to cats, it is their sense of smell. From birth kitten's mother knows them by smell and they know it and distinguish it by smell from the rest of cats. In such a way from the very beginning of their lives cats have well developed sense of smell that helps them in their further life. It helps them to hunt the animals, distinguish each other, and get acquainted with other animals.
Every cat has its own smell because different parts of the body of a cat secrete the special substance that has individual and the only smell. That is why a smell for a cat is its id-card. A cat uses the same substance to mark its territory, cats, people and other animals that are considered to be the members of its group.
When a person strokes a cat it tries to put a special smell on a person and in such a way people help them to spread their smell and at the same time people mix their smell with the personal one. This smell helps the cat to distinguish the stranger from the member of his group and in such a way to protect their territory in the case of attack.
It is necessary to obtain the smell of a group if the newcomer wants to become a part of it. First of all, before becoming the part of a group a newcomer should earn the right to be the part of it. And after a period of time it gets the smell of a group that changes because adds a personal smell of the newcomer. From that time the newcomer is considered to be the part of the group and his smell is well remembered.
A cat is always attentive to the new smell that appears on his territory, even if it is the smell of furniture or other new object. Every new smell may influence the position of the cat in its group and can be a potential danger that causes the disorder between the cat and the world but for a small period of time. But if the cat is sensitive it may start marking the territory using urine. The cat wants to self estimate and makes its smell more intensive. That is why the first thing the cat does is smells the new object.
Besides, people also have their own special smell and scientists proved that mothers feel the smell of their children and can distinguish the T-shirts of their children by the smell. But nowadays people try to hide their smell using perfumes. By the way a new perfume can also disturb your cat. That is why the reaction of the cat on you can be inadequate first time but it will get used to it.
