The eyesight of cats.
Every intelligent person knows that cats have very good eyesight and that cats are capable to see in the dark. But not everybody knows why the cat needs it.
According to the scientists cats have the most developed eyesight among all the mammals. Among all pets, cats have the biggest eyes that always look in the same direction.
Besides, the eye of a cat has a very complicated structure and has a very good aesthetic look. An eye apple changes in dependence of the brightness of the light that sometimes makes the eyes of a cat especially attractive. Thanks to this fact a great number of tales and stories about intellectual ability of cats and their magical possibilities have appeared. Besides, eyes of a cat "shine" in the darkness and that is why cats make the impression of mystical creatures.
Such developed senses due to the nature of this animal. The cat needs its highly developed eyesight for hunting.
Cats perfectly see in the darkness, their eyesight is 10 times better than the eyesight of a person. However, cats see the details worse in a well lightened place. That is why you may notice that your favorite pet prefers dark rooms and corners. They like to have a rest and clean themselves there. Besides, especially cats need their eyesight to catch a mouse because mice live in dark basements and live the night life.
Even now there are still people who think that cats don't see colors and that they percept all the objects they see in black and white colors. But recently it has been proved that cats can distinguish several colors but worse than a person can.
But the grey color they distinguish even better than we do and percept almost 25 tints of it. This fact can be explained by the look of the animals they hunt. Almost all of them have grey hair of different shadows from the light grey to dark grey.
Cats have also the stereoscopic eyesight that allows them to measure exactly the distance to the object.
Nature gave all the possibilities to the cat to hunt. That is why all specialties of the cat's eyesight are adapted to it. That is why the cat sees in details the objects that are situated near but can't see properly the objects that are far away from it. This fact can be explained by the way a cat hunts. Cats use the strategy of waiting and attack that is why they don't need to have good long-distance eyesight to run after the animal.
One more feature helps to get meals for a cat. Playing with your favorite pet you may notice that a cat reacts more actively on the object that moves horizontally than on the vertically moved objects. It is explained by the fact that mice and other rodents move horizontally and can't climb vertical objects.
So we can easily understand that all the features of the cat's eyes are made to satisfy the main need - meals. Of course, cats that live in houses and apartments with people don't need this eyesight anymore because they get everything from the person and don't have to hunt mice. However, a lot of people keep this pet with such aim. But still cats have all instincts of a hunter.
